Drawing shows how eddy-covariance instruments capture information. Instruments mounted on towers measure the flux of airflow. Turbulent and rotating eddies are found within all moving airflows. Each eddy has vertical and horizontal components. The sensors measure all of these wind components, plus associated characteristics, such as temperature, humidity, etc. © UC Regents 2014.
