ONEFlux Processing

The AmeriFlux Management Project (AMP) uses the ONEFlux (Open Network-Enabled Flux) codes to process flux/met data into the AmeriFlux FLUXNET data product. The ONEFlux processing codes are jointly developed by a global collaboration that includes AMP. Key computation steps include friction velocity threshold estimation and filtering, gap-filling of micrometeorological and flux variables, partitioning of CO2 fluxes into ecosystem respiration and gross primary production, uncertainty estimates, and more. The AmeriFlux FLUXNET data product will be included in future global datasets and is compatible with the FLUXNET2015 dataset.

AmeriFlux ONEFlux processing uses the following as inputs

BASE variables used in ONEFlux processing

See Data Variables for a full description of these variables. The following lists variables that are Required and Strongly encouraged (optional) for ONEFlux processing. Additional suggested variables are included in the AmeriFlux FLUXNET data product if they are present in a site’s AmeriFlux BASE data.

  • Required: CO2, FC, H, LE, WS, USTAR, TA, RH, PA, SW_IN (or PPFD_IN)
  • Strongly encouraged: SC (if applicable), G, NETRAD, PPFD_IN, LW_IN, P, SWC, TS
  • Additional suggested: WD, PPFD_DIF, PPFD_OUT, SW_DIF, SW_OUT, LW_OUT

Note: Multiple depths of soil temperature (TS) and soil water content (SWC) are supported in ONEFlux processing.

How to get your AmeriFlux site in the ONEFlux processing queue

Follow the steps below. Sites with correct data and metadata will be queued for processing regularly.

  1. Select the AmeriFlux CC-BY-4.0 Data License for your site’s data if not already selected. Contact ameriflux-support@lbl.gov if you have not received an email for selecting CC-BY-4.0.
  2. Confirm that your published AmeriFlux BASE data contain at a minimum the required variables for ONEFlux processing (see above).
    • Your BASE data product can be accessed via Download Data.
    • If desired, submit updated flux/met data. Consider adding as many encouraged and suggested variables as possible (see above). Find details for submitting flux/met data here.
  3. Update your site’s Variable Information via the online tool.
    • There must be an entry for every BASE variable that is used in ONEFlux.
    • Site-specific instructions are included on the tool.
    • An AmeriFlux account and team membership with the site is required to access the tool.
  4. Upload a BADM AmeriFlux Variable Aggregation form. If you haven’t done this before, email ameriflux-support@lbl.gov to request this form and we’ll send a proposed version for your review and you can add updates as needed. The AMP team might also reach out to you to request feedback on this information.
