BADM Group Overview
BADM variables in this group are organized as shown below. The overview highlights what variables are required per group. It also indicates which variables cannot be specified together ( OR ) in the same group entry. See BADM Basics for more details.
Multiple entries of this BADM group can be reported per site. However, combinations of Ⓒ variables must be unique. Read more:

Examples
Variable Requirements | Units | Description |
---|---|---|
INST_MODEL Required | LIST(INST_MODEL) Show | Manufacturer and/or model, or type of instrument Select from the LIST INST_MODEL the most precise definition of the sensor used. If it is not available in the list, please contact the regional network for support and evaluate the addition of a new code. |
INST_SN Ⓒ Required | free text | Serial number or other unique text string used to identify this instrument Report the serial number of the sensor in order to identify it in the future and relate it to the measured and submitted variable. If the sensor doesn't have a serial number, a number can be assigned by the PI and kept linked univocally to the sensor. A PI assigned S/N should start with either the site code or an acronym related to the institution (e.g. LBNL12345). It must be unique across the entire network. |
INST_DATE Ⓒ Required | YYYYMMDDHHMM | Instrument metadata applicability date |
INST_DATE_UNC Optional | days | Uncertainty in the Instrument metadata applicability date |
INST_COMMENT Optional | free text | Instrument comments |
INST_FIRMWARE Optional | free text | Instrument firmware version Report the firmware of the instrument when available. This is particularly important for gas analyzers to track possible upgrades and differences with data acquired using different versions of the firmware. |
INST_SAMPLING_INT Optional | seconds | Measurement sampling interval Report the average time in seconds between two measurements. This can be different from the resolution of the output data if averaging is performed in the data logger; if they are different, INST_AVERAGING_INT should also be reported. |
INST_AVERAGING_INT Optional | seconds | Averaging interval for data from data logger Report the averaging interval of the data logger in case measurements are made at higher frequency and then averaged in the logger. Leave blank if no averaging at the logger. |
INST_HEAT Optional | LIST(INST_HEAT) Show | Instrument heating Report if the instrument is heated (also if only one part of the sensor if heated). In case of heating of the intake tube of a closed path gas analyzer, use the INST_GA_CP_TUBE_THERM variable. Use INST_COMMENT to give more details if needed. |
INST_SHIELDING Optional | LIST(INST_SHIELDING) Show | Instrument shielding such as radiation, rain, or none Use this variable to report if the instrument or part of the instrument is shielded or insulated. Additional details can be provided using the INST_COMMENT variable. |
INST_ASPIRATION Optional | LIST(INST_ASPIRATION) Show | Instrument aspiration such as natural, mechanical, or none Report if a flow of air is present in the instrument and if this is natural (ventilation) (e.g. thanks to temperature gradients or wind), or if it is mechanical (e.g. with a pump). |
INST_SA_OFFSET_NORTH Optional | degrees (from North) | Orientation of the instrument from magnetic north (0-359 degrees) Azimuth angle of the orientation of the sonic anemometer from magnetic north. |
INST_SA_WIND_FORMAT Optional | LIST(SA_WIND_FORMAT) Show | Format used in reporting wind components Report the format of the wind measurements performed by the sonic anemometer. |
INST_SA_GILL_ALIGN Optional | LIST(SA_ALIGN_NORTH) Show | North alignment format for Gill brand anemometers When a Gill anemometer is used, specify the north alignment format. Leave blank for other anemometers. |
INST_GA_CP_FILTERS Optional | free text | Describe the number and sizes of the closed path filters (closed path only) Report the number, type, size and position of the filters used along the tube for closed path analyzers used in the calculation of fluxes via eddy covariance. |
INST_GA_CP_TUBE_LENGTH Optional | cm | Tube length (closed path only) Length of the tube from the intake to the gas analyzer for closed path analyzers used in the calculation of fluxes via eddy covariance. |
INST_GA_CP_TUBE_IN_DIAM Optional | mm | Tube inner diameter (closed path only) Internal diameter of the intake tube for closed path gas analyzers used in the calculation of fluxes via eddy covariance. |
INST_GA_CP_TUBE_MAT Optional | LIST(GA_CP_MATERIAL) Show | Tube material (closed path only) Report the material of the gas analyzer intake tube that is in contact with the gas for closed path gas analyzers used in the calculation of fluxes via eddy covariance. Use the predefined list. Use the INST_COMMENT field for additional details. |
INST_GA_CP_TUBE_THERM Optional | LIST(GA_CP_THERMAL) Show | Tube thermal treatment (closed path only) Report if the intake tube is insulated or insulated+heated for closed path gas analyzers used in the calculation of fluxes via eddy covariance. |
INST_GA_CP_FLOW_RATE Optional | liter min-1 | Nominal tube flow rate in the GA tube (closed path only) Report the nominal flow rate of the gas analyzer intake for closed path gas analyzers used in the calculation of fluxes via eddy covariance. |
INST_GA_CP_MFC Optional | LIST(YES_NO) Show | Yes if the mass flow controller (MFC) is present (closed path only) |
INST_GA_OP_AZIM_MOUNT Optional | degrees (from North) | Azimuth angle from north of the gas analyzer as installed (open path only) Report the azimuth of the open path gas analyzer (not the arm). Not needed when INST_GA_OP_VERT_MOUNT is zero. |
INST_GA_OP_VERT_MOUNT Optional | degrees | Angle with respect to vertical (zenith angle) of gas analyzer as installed (open path only) For open path gas analyzers only. Equal to zero for vertical installation of open path gas analyzer. |
