2022 AmeriFlux Annual Meeting Overview

25 Years of AmeriFlux – past, present and future

We are delighted to host the 2022 AmeriFlux Annual Meeting! This meeting is for the whole community – students and early career researchers encouraged! This year, we are excited to see some of you face-to-face again, read more about our proposed hybrid mode below. You can now submit abstracts for posters and contributed talks, as well as breakout session ideas.

Update 7/23: Registration deadline for in-person attendance is August 5th!!

Please CAREFULLY READ our travel page to find out what is covered by the registration and lodging fee. Note especially that lodging on site at UMBS may involve sharing a cabin with another attendee and that you need to bring your own bedding or sleeping bag!

When you are ready to register for the meeting, you can do so at this link. If you are joining in person you must register by August 5th. We can’t wait to see you!

Virtual location: worldwide! Read more below about how we envision our first hybrid meeting.

Call for Abstracts – deadline is July 3!

These themes are of special interest this year, but all talk topics are welcome:

  • 25 Years of AmeriFlux – Past, present and future (including but not limited to science application of long data records, such as disturbance, wildfire, increase in ppm CO2, trends in evapotranspiration)
  • Remote sensing – At this meeting, we will kick off the new Theme Year of Remote Sensing
  • Emerging topics in coastal and urban ecosystem science
  • General science session: submit your abstracts on any work relating to eddy covariance fluxes

After a successful premiere in 2021, we again welcome Team submissions, with multiple presenting authors sharing the time. Presentations can be given virtually or in person. Scientific merit and thematic fit are our main criteria for selecting abstracts for contributed presentations. In addition, we aim for a balance of contributions that are delivered in-person and remotely. Remember that this is our first hybrid meeting, and we are learning as we go.

The abstract submission is open now! The deadline is July 3.

Call for Breakout session proposals

As always, we will devote time to breakout discussions that allow for interaction and brainstorming. If YOU would like to lead a breakout session, submit a description through this form by July 3. For some inspiration, find the list of breakout topics from 2021 here and from 2020 here.

Typically, breakout sessions are organized and chaired by the person or group of people submitting them. You can indicate with your submission if you are interested in finding co-organizers. Breakout sessions can take different formats, such as short science presentations followed by discussions, panel formats, guided discussions etc. We expect to have a (limited) number of zoom-room setups available, enabling breakout sessions with in-person and virtual participants. If you propose a hybrid breakout, we request that at least one of the session conveners attends the meeting in person, to be able to facilitate in the breakout room. Alternatively, you may propose a virtual-only breakout session, with conveners and attendees participating through zoom.

Conference Format – Hybrid

This meeting will encompass live sessions of science talks, interactive poster sessions, interactive breakout discussions, an update from the AmeriFlux Management Project, a special session on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and more! A tentative agenda will be posted shortly.

This year, we are attempting to offer this meeting in a hybrid format – in-person and virtual – for the first time. This choice aligns with popular demand expressed in the post-meeting feedback forms over the previous two years. Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with any member of the organizing committee with questions or suggestions.

At a minimum, we aim to facilitate virtual attendance for the keynote talks and plenary sessions. We will also consider parallel virtual formats for breakouts or other parts of the conference, based on organizer capacity and interest from the community. This hybrid format is uncharted territory, so please get involved to help us make it work, and be flexible as we learn along the way! We will not promise that attending virtually will be equal to attending in person. For starters, the agenda will go from morning to evening US Central time, which may be inconvenient depending on your location. There will be a small fee for virtual attendees, designed to cover logistical cost of virtual aspects only, likely <$15.
