FLUXNET2015 Paper Metadata: Height / Depth and Model

(back to FLUXNET2015 Metadata Requirements)

Aims

Provide the height of the gas analyzer and sonic used to generate the flux variable.
Provide the instrument model of the gas analyzer and sonic used to generate the flux variable.
Provide the depths of the TS and SWC measurements.

Instructions

Use the FLUXNET2015_Height_Depth_Model.csv file emailed to you (previously submitted information is pre-populated — see note below)
or download a blank file: FLUXNET2015_Height_Depth_Model.csv.
Safari and Chrome users: To download the file, control-click / right click the link, choose “Download Linked File As” or “Save Link As”, and specify a destination.
  • The file has three header rows: 1) Variable name; 2) Required / optional info; 3) Units. Do not change these rows.
  • For units indicated as “LIST( )”, find the options available in the tables below.
  • Changes of the height / depth or model metadata during the site’s data record should be reported with the DATE indicating the date of change. If no DATE is reported, we will assume the metadata applies from the beginning of the data record.
  • If MS Excel is not being used to view / update the csv files, put quotation marks around entries with commas. MS Excel will automatically adds quotes to csv files when needed.
  • The Height / Depth and Model information submitted is for the FLUXNET2015 paper only.
Notes:
Pre-populated values are from L2 data used as FLUXNET2015 input. For sites that have submitted flux-met data to AmeriFlux since FLUXNET2015, the pre-populated values are cross-checked against any height and model information provided for new variable names that are mapped to the L2 variables in the Variable Information Tool. (AmeriFlux / FLUXNET account required. Customize columns to see L2 Variables.)

Using Excel to edit the csv files will cause any timestamps to be saved in scientific notation.
To prevent Excel from converting timestamps to scientific notation, follow these steps:

  1. Select the column containing the Timestamp data
  2. Under Format > Cells, select the Number tab
  3. Select “Number” from the list of options and decrease decimal to create a whole number
  4. Save file as a CSV file
  5. Open the CSV file in a text editor to verify the changes have been made and saved

Report the following height / depth and model metadata:

Item Required Units Description
VARNAME Yes LIST(VARIABLE_NAME) The variable to which the height / depth or model information pertains.
Use FC for the VARNAME with the gas analyzer and sonic information.
HEIGHT_DEPTH Yes meters The height or depth of the VARNAME. Depths are reported as negative values.
MODEL_GAS_ANALYZER Yes if VARNAME is FC LIST(GAS_ANALYZER) The gas analyzer model used for the flux measurements.
MODEL_SONIC Yes if VARNAME is FC LIST(SONIC) The sonic anemometer model used for the flux measurements.
DATE_START Yes if indicating a change YYYYMMDDHHMM Date when the information first applies. No value means the information begins at the start of the site’s data record.
NOTES Communication btw AmeriFlux and site teams free text A place for the AmeriFlux Team to leave a note for the site team and vice versa. Information in the notes will not be included in the FLUXNET2015 Metadata.
